

I 100% acknowledge that I did this avoid the extra management bloat in an already hectic boss fight (6 players, 4 NPC allies, Boss, Lair actions, Legendary actions, boss minions). This flipped the spectrum from unfun on my end, to unfun on their end as they continued to blow spell slots and sit helpless turn-after-turn. The boss had Counterspell and used it to prevent Conjure Animals from being cast multiple times. Counterspell: In a recent boss fight, the player was about to upcast Conjure Animals to flood the board with another 16 creatures.Everyone at the table was completely disengaged from the game during these turns and it took effort on my end to get everyone reinvested again. It feels especially unfair to the players at the table who are efficient with their turns and resolve everything in under a minute. Even then, it still took a large chunk of time to resolve. I asked them to roll their attack rolls in advance next round. I let them cast 16 Cr 1/4 creatures in one encounter and it brought the combat to a halt for 10-15 minutes as each turn was resolved. Upcasting the spell: Player wants to cast dozens of creatures.I definitely felt the tension of the encounter fizzle and told the player not to do that in the future, and to their credit they realized immediately that they shouldn't have done that. The player who cast the spell immediately shouted out that the Giant Octopi move faster with 60ft vs the Giant Shark's 50ft and they should just outrun them. In an encounter, the players were riding Giant Octopi (Conjured Animals) underwater and were attacked by Giant Sharks. but I've already run into a metagaming issue after the player has reviewed all animal options. Surprisingly, I've found a number of posts here and elsewhere about whether the DM lets players choose their which animals.
